welcome

The OAICC was founded by the late Derek C. Davidson in 1982 on behalf of all those who are interested in collecting the material evidence for our optical past. There are about 200 members from many countries including the UK, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, South Africa and the United States of America. Regular visits and excursions are arranged to museums and private collections, both in the UK and abroad.

Members have many interests covering the development of spectacles (including oriental spectacles), pince-nez, eyebaths, ophthalmic instruments, spyglasses, opera glasses, prints and antique books. Look at interests covered for full list of subects covered by the Club, we have experts available for many of these categories. A newsletter 'Ophthalmic Antiques' is published quarterly with articles of general and specialised interest, along with auction news and details of club excursions (both in the UK and abroad) and publications.

The Club publishes a number of informative, instructional and reference books, see under publications & library. The most recent project, a revised edition of the Shire book 'Spectacles, Lorgnettes and Monocles', has been produced in tribute to club founder Derek Davidson.

The OAICC holds its AGM each year at the College of Optometrists in London, home of the British Optical Association Museum. Club members have provided extensive help to the BOA Museum Documentation Project and the OAICC's collection of books is held on loan by the BOA Library, see under publications & library for a full list.

All club members are entitled to access the group's Spectacles Gallery, an electronic image storage website, see under picture galleries where pictures of members' collections or of club excursions and study visits may be found and viewed.
